Last Saturday the SUNS club hosted the table tennis competition for the 2007 NSW Corporate Games. Over 100 players took part representing 30 organisations. Skill levels went from highly experienced to almost complete beginners.
Local SNDTTA player Michael Kemp, representing Optus, won the Men's Singles, and was runner up in the Men's Doubles with partner Morgan Ng, also a local and representing Optus.
Integral Energy had the largest turnout from a single organisation with 16 representatives, and were champions in the Men's Doubles, and also grabbed third place in the doubles (local player Han Phan and partner). A team photo is available here.
Several players expressed interest in joining a club in our district.
You might want to look out for this tournament next year!

Congratulations to Willoughby Blue who defeated Suns A 3-2, 12-8 at Willoughby Park Centre last night in the Grand Final of the Spring Interclub Competition!
In one of the closest Grand Finals for years, the championship was decided by the doubles with singles rubbers at 2-2. An enthusiastic crowd provided great support for Willoughby from start to finish. Ellman Lee turned in a stellar performance in winning both singles and combining well with the team's junior member, Jenkin Tang, to win the doubles. Everyone else gave their very best and the Suns players fought valiantly to the last point.
For the first time, Willoughby showed they can win a Grand Final without the great Gary Lo!
Following are detailed results in order of play:
Stewart McDonald (S) d. Paul Frankenreiter (W) -5, 8, 6, 9
Ellman Lee (W) d. Michael Kemp (S) 5, 11, 11

Stewart McDonald wins Hornsby Shire’s Centenary 2006 Northern Districts Table Tennis Championships.
NSW doubles champion Stewart McDonald of Kellyville overcame fierce resistance from his Thornleigh SUNS team mate Morgan Ng to win the 2006 title. Although the 3-0 win looks convincing, the match was close and exciting to watch, with the recent Top 5 winner, Carlingford’s Morgan, putting Stewart under a lot of pressure and showing that the district has an abundance of strong players.
In the A doubles Ellman Lee (Willoughby TTC) and Shin Nakazawa (Ararat Ryde) sprung a surprise by beating NSW champions and favourites Michael Kemp and Stewart McDonald of Thornleigh Suns 3-0 in an entertaining final.

Top 5 Challenge Results
Congratulations to the following Top 5 Challenge winners:
Morgan Ng who yesterday won the Division 1 Top 5 Challenge held at Manly Vale! Weston Cai who won the Division A/R Challenge, Edward Caruana who won the Division 2 Challenge, and Frank Kustra who won the Division 3 Top 5 Challenge, all held at SUNS last Friday
In Division 1 before a small but enthusiastic group of spectators, Michael Kemp, Ellman Lee, Michel Khachiki, Fung Cheung and Morgan played a keenly contested round-robin with the final result in doubt up to the last match. (Unfortunately, Stewart McDonald, Book Aphichawakoonkhajorn and Steffen Burchhardt were overseas and could not compete.)
At the end of the round-robin, Morgan, Michel and Ellman had all won three of their four matches, and a countback showed that Morgan had won 11 games, Ellman 10 and Michel 9. Under the countback rules, Morgan was declared the winner and presented with a perpetual trophy and an individual medal. We look forward to running this event each year.
In Division A/R the players invited were: Michael Sun and Weston Cai from Suns, Guy Roose and Clement Siu from Willoughby and Charlie Wang from Nth Syd. Leagues. It turned into a close battle and it was Weston Cai who won the trophy with 3 wins. The result was only decided in the very last match when Weston beat his team mate Michael Sun 3-1, who finished 2nd.
In Division 2 the players invited were: Edward Caruana of Hornsby RSL, Cliff and Edward Chan of Suns and Vahe Parseghian and Morrie Ohanessian of Ararat. Edward Caruana was the clear winner with 3 wins and a 5 games loss against Morrie Ohanessian. The matches were marred by several disputes about bat changes during play and a forfeit by members of the Ararat representatives. Edward Chan finished 2nd.
In Division 3 the players invited were: Guy Chan of Hornsby RSL, Frank Kustra, George Biro and Steve Marton, all of Harbord Diggers and Boris Tong of Suns. The title was won by Frank Kustra, who won all his matches and another seasoned campaigner Guy Chan came 2nd.

2006 Willoughby Club Closed Singles
Congratulations to Jenkin Tang who last night won the 2006 Willoughby Closed Singles, defeating Fung Cheung 5, -14, 4, -6, 6 in the final and Ellman Lee in the semi-final 8, 7, -7, -8, 7. Fung defeated Tony Bergman 9, 11, 6 in the other semi. Although Jenkin was stretched to 5 games by Ellman and Fung, he played confidently, with some superb hitting and speed around the table. In the four years that players have competed for the Carol Hughes Perpetual Trophy, we have had four different winners. It was good to see a high school youngster win this year!

Suns won 3 singles and 2 doubles, while Willoughby won 3 singles and one doubles. There were a lot of interested spectators (mostly from Willoughby) who applauded loudly and often during the hard fought and intense matches. Special congratulations to Weston Cai (Suns) and Guy Roose (Willoughby) who won both their singles matches.

The first score sheets have started to arrive. Please try and send them early as this keeps the points tables current for everyone.
Also, please use the full player name at least the first time on the score sheet. I know that several players have unique first names, but just writing Tony makes the recorder waste time trying to figure out which Tony.
Thanks, Rod.

SNDTTA DIVISION 2 SPRING INTERCLUB GRAND FINAL RESULT (9/12/05)

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you all.

SNDTTA DIVISION 1 SPRING INTERCLUB GRAND FINAL RESULT (9/12/05)
CONGRATULATIONS TO SUNS B!
Last night Suns B defeated Willoughby Blue in the Division 1 Grand Final 4-1, 14-8, 210-187 to win the Spring Interclub Competition. Details as follows:
(Order of play)
Ng (S) d. Lee (W) -4, 5, 8, 7
Evans (S) d. Frankenreiter (W) 3, 7, 2
Lee d. Evans -8, 5, -6, 6, 5
Ng d. Frankenreiter 6, -9, 9, -10, 10
Ng/Evans d. Lee/Frankenreiter 13, -9, -3, 6, 8
Morgan and Jonathan played solidly throughout the match and deserved to win. Willoughby resisted strongly but it was very hard to come back from two rubbers down. Morgan and Paul played a thrilling 5 set marathon (101 points) which clinched the match for Suns.
It was pleasing to see supporters present from Suns and, on several occasions, play on other tables stopped as everyone became absorbed in the battle.
We look forward to the 2006 Autumn Interclub which will start around the beginning of March. Best wishes for the festive season to all.
Regards,
Syd Birchall

SNDTTA DIVISION 1 SPRING INTERCLUB SEMI-FINAL RESULTS (2/12/05)
Willoughby Blue d. Ararat 3-2, 9-8, 153-152
Nakazawa (A) d. Frankenreiter (W) 3, 3, 7
Lee (W) d. Khachiki (A) -9, 6, 8, 6
Khachiki d. Frankenreiter 9, 9, 4
Lee d. Nakazawa 7, 8, 6
Frankenreiter/Lee d. Nakazawa/Khachiki 4, -9, 9, 10
Suns B d. Suns A 3-2, 11-6, 186-150
Evans (B) d. Falck (A) 5, 4, 9
Kemp (A) d. Ng (B) 10, 11, 18
Kemp d. Evans -7, 9, 10, -7, 7
Ng d. Falck 5, 6, 7
Ng/Evans d. Kemp/Falck 8, 6, 7
Both matches were close with the winner being decided by the doubles. It is very pleasing to see such close results in semi-finals. This has not occurred over the last few years. The closest match was Willoughby/Ararat where the doubles looked as though it could go either way, while the closest rubber was Kemp/Evans where each player scored 48 points over 5 hard fought games. Congratulations to the winning teams and well done to the runners-up!
So the Grand Final will be between Willoughby Blue and Suns B at Willoughby this Friday night (9/12/05). If you would like to see what will be a terrific match, and possibly play some table tennis as well, come along on Friday!
Regards,
Syd Birchall
The final round of divison A/R did not change the final placings, so the grand final will be between North Sydney Leagues C (1) and SUNS D (2) at North Sydney Leagues, Friday 9 December.
Individually, congratulations go to Tony Han with a 100% record from 22 matches!
The division 2 results were:
SUNS E d. SUNS G 5-2
Harbord Diggers C d. SUNS F 6-2
So the Grand Final will be between SUNS E (1) and Harbord Diggers C (2) at Thornleigh, Friday 9 December
28 Nov 2005
In division 1, the top four places were finally decided after Week 14, so the semi-final matches will be:
Willoughby Blue (1) v. Ararat (4) at Willoughby, Friday 2 December
Suns B (2) v. Suns A (3) at Thornleigh, Friday 2 December
Winners of these matches will meet in the Grand Final on Friday 9 December.
The battle for third and fourth places was tight with both teams finishing on 32 points but with Suns A having 120 "games for" compared with Ararat's 118.
Best of luck to the semi-finalists! To the three teams who missed out on the semis, thanks for competing and always being competitive.
Turning to Individual Performances, I know Derek Kerr (Suns A) will understand if we put his results to one side. Derek is a fine player but he only played 4 rubbers and won all of those. So congratulations to Ellman Lee (Willoughby) for finishing at top of the table with 94.1% rubbers won, losing only one! Well done to Fung Cheung (Willoughby) and Jonathan Evans (Suns B) who took the next two places. A special mention is due to those people who played a maximum 24 rubbers in the competition -- Morgan Ng, Tommy Tong, Wei Tong and Rod Falck.
Regards,
Syd Birchall
In division 2, the semi-final matches will be:
SUNS E (1) vs SUNS G (4) at Thornleigh, Friday 2 December
Harbord Diggers C (2) vs Suns F (3)
Individually, Theo Morsink finished with a 100% record.
Division A/R still has one round robin match to go. Currently North Sydney Leagues C are in first place and SUNS D are running second, and neither of them can be caught. There is a possibility that they could swap positions after the last round.
22 Jul 2005
The results from SUNS D vs North Sydney Leagues C have been received.18 Jul 2005
Congratulations to Suns A on a very convincing 5-0 (15 games to 4) win over Willoughby Blue in the Autumn Interclub Teams Competition Grand Final! Details are as follows:
Suns A def. Willoughby Blue 5-0
Kemp d. Cheung 8, 9, 5
McDonald d. Lee 6, 8, 7
Kemp d. Lee -9, 11, 6, 9

The results have not been received and neither captain can be contacted, and the placing for the 2nd semi-final depends on the result.4 Jul 2005

Attached are results for the final week of the Autumn Interclub Competition; i.e. Week 14, commencing 20 June. Congratulations to Harbord on winning fourth place and a chance in the semi-finals. Overall, it was a close competition with six of the eight teams having a good prospect of making the semis.
The semi-finals will be as follows:
Suns A v. Harbord at Thornleigh on Friday, 1 July
Willoughby Blue v. Ararat at Willoughby on Friday, 1 July
The Grand Final will be played between winners of the semis during the following week, details to be advised.
Putting aside Peter Monostori’s brief appearance, congratulations to Stewart McDonald, Michael Kemp and Morgan Ng, all from Suns, who filled the top three places on the Individual Performance table. Well done also, to Wilson Chu and Marcus Green from Suns G who played hard and consistently throughout the comp with only limited success.
Best of luck to semi-final players!

Attached are progress results for the Autumn Interclub Competition up to and including Week 13 (week commencing 13/6). Many thanks to team captains for getting results in so quickly at a vital stage of the comp. The first three places have been decided although this week's results will determine whether Willoughby Blue or Ararat finish in second place. There is an exciting fight for fourth place with only one point separating three teams. After looking at the draw for the final week, one would have to say it probably favours Harbord but anything could happen.
Best of luck!
Entry Forms for the 24 July championships will be out soon!

16 Jun 2005
Attached are progress results for the Autumn Interclub Competition up to and including Week 12 (week commencing 6/6). It now seems clear that Suns A, Willoughby Blue & Ararat will fill the top three places at the end of Round 2 with the fourth place being fought out between Harbord, North Sydney & Suns B. The fourth placed team will play Suns A in one semi-final and Willoughby Blue will play Ararat in the other semi.
Entry forms for the SNDTTA championships on Sunday, 24 July, will be distributed shortly.

7 Jun 2005
Attached are progress results for the Autumn Interclub Competition up to and including Week 11 (week commencing 30/5). Ararat and Willoughby Blue have changed places on the points table while Harbord has narrowly edged North Sydney out of the top four. There are three weeks to go in Round 2 and North Sydney probably has tougher matches than Harbord.
Keep in mind also that semis and the grand final will be played at the venue decided by the team placed higher on the points table.
All in all, it looks like an exciting month ahead!
A reminder to keep Sunday, 24 July free for the District Championships.

Attached are the progress results for the Autumn Interclub Competition up to and including Week 10 (week commencing 23/5). Score Sheet for Suns A v. Ararat has not yet been received.
Suns A and Ararat are still in the lead despite having only 9 weeks' results recorded. Gary Lo made a welcome return to our competition last Friday and he actually lost a close match, 3-2 to Paul Frankenreiter. This is a very rare event but it injects some additional interest into the competition. Well done Paul!
Remember, Sunday 24 July is the day for our annual district championships -- please keep it free.

Attached are the usual progress results for Division 1 Autumn Interclub Comp up to and including Week 7 (week commencing 2/5) which is the last week of Round 1. Suns A and Ararat are in first and second places with daylight third. An exciting feature of Round 2 will be a hard fought contest between at least four teams for third and fourth places. Semi-finals will be between 1 & 4 and 2 & 3.
Apart from Peter Monostori who has played only one match, individual leaders are Michael Kemp and Stewart McDonald from Suns A. I understand that Gary Lo has returned from Hong Kong and he will strengthen Willoughby Blue.
Most of you will be aware that the 48th World Championships have just ended in Shanghai. Results for a few events are listed below:Men’s Singles: WANG Liqin d. MA Lin 11-9, 3-11, 8-11, 11-9, 11-9, 11-7
Men’s Doubles: KONG Linghui/WANG Hao d. BOLL Timo/SUSS Christian 11-9, 11-3, 11-9, 7-11, 11-6
Women’s Singles: ZHANG Yining d. GUO Yan 5-11, 11-7, 11-7, 4-11, 11-8, 13-11
All the above are from China except for the losing doubles pair from Germany.

Attached are the usual progress results up to and including Week 6 (week commencing 25/4). There is now only one match outstanding (Suns B v. Suns G) and this week (Week 7) is the last week of the first round. At present Suns A and Ararat have a clear lead over other teams but the picture will become clearer after this week's matches.

To All Division 1 Players:Attached are the usual progress results for the Autumn Interclub Competition up to and including week commencing 28 March (week 3). There is one deferred match between Harbord and Suns B. Suns A and Ararat have jumped out to a convincing lead.
Although only three weeks' matches have been played, I have commenced recording individual performances on the "Individuals" tab of the file, but it will take a few more weeks for really meaningful results to appear.
There are some players for whom I do not have e-mail addresses, so could captains check to see if all their players are included and, if not, please let me have the e-mail addresses.

Welcome to all Division 1 players in the SNDTTA Autumn Interclub Teams Competition!
Attached are progress results for teams up to and including week 2. I have not yet compiled individual results as it is too early for these to have much meaning at all. I have introduced reporting of each team match result as this adds interest to the points table.
Regrettably, we have temporarily lost the Hornsby RSL team due to Derek Kerr's commitments but Wilson Chu is playing in a third Suns team (G) and it is good to keep him within the competition.
Would team captains please let me know e-mail addresses of new players so that I can add them to the distribution list. Any comments or suggestions are always welcome.
Best wishes for a successful competition!

20 Mar 2005
The 2005 Autumn competition has begun.
A couple have changes have been made for this season. Division 3 is no longer with us and Division 2 has been divided into two groups, A and B, and matches will be played with 3-player teams with 6 singles and 3 doubles. See the draws for full details.
Division One Grand Final played
The Grand Final of the Division 1 Spring Interclub Competition was played last night at Willoughby with Willoughby Blue defeating Suns A 4-1. Congratulations to Gary Lo, Ellman Lee, Fung Chung & Guy Roose (c) and commiserations to Stewart McDonald (c), Michael Kemp & Owen Tsao! Details are as follows, in the order in which rubbers were played:
McDonald def. Lee 7, 7, 8
Lo def. Kemp -16, 6, 3, 9
Lee def. Kemp -6, 7, -9, 11, 3
Lo def. McDonald 9, 9, 7
L/L def. McD/K 9, 6, 9
Although the result was convincing, it didn't look that way early on with Willoughby losing the opening rubber, Gary Lo losing the first (marathon) game of his rubber, and Michael Kemp having two match points against Ellman Lee. The grand final was always exciting and was well supported by an enthusiastic crowd.
Best wishes for the Xmas/New Year holiday season!

To All Division 1 Players:
The results pages contain the final team points table and final individual performances for the Spring Interclub Competition. Semi-final details are on the teams attachment but the first semi was played on Monday night with a 5-0 win to Suns A who will meet the winner of the other semi in the Grand Final on Friday, 17/12. Congratulations to Gary Lo for once again finishing top of the individual performances and well done to everyone who played, especially those who played 22 and 24 matches. I'll let you know full results of the semis and Grand Final.
Regards,
Syd Birchall 9498-8646
8/12/04
To All Division 1 Players:
Final week matches have been completed and, as soon as I receive all the score sheets, the usual points table and individual performances will be updated and issued. However, I have been informed of the results and a summarised points table is as follows:
|
Willoughby Blue |
50 |
|
Ararat A |
42 |
|
Suns A |
41 |
|
Suns B |
37 |
|
Harbord A |
32 |
|
Willoughby Red |
31 |
|
Hornsby A |
24 |
|
North Sydney A |
23 |
Therefore, Willoughby Blue will play Suns B in one semi-final this Friday night at Willoughby and Ararat will play Suns A in the other semi-final tonight (Monday) at Ararat. The winners will meet in the Grand Final next week at a venue yet to be decided, depending on the semi-final results.
Good luck to all!

To All SNDTTA Division 1 Players:
Attached are the progress results for the Spring Interclub Competition and Individual Performances up to and including week commencing 22 November (Week 13). The only result not yet included is Suns B v. Ararat but we know that Ararat won 3-2. With only this week to go in Round 2, Willoughby Blue will finish in first place and Ararat and Suns A will take two of the remaining three places in the semi-finals. Suns B must be favoured to take the final place but, without going into the possible outcomes of this week's matches, it is theoretically possible for either Harbord or Willoughby Red to push them out.
An exciting finish lies ahead and good luck to all!

TO SNDTTA Division 1 Players:
Progress results for the Spring Interclub Competition can be found on the
results pages up to and including week commencing 15/11 (Week 12). For the first
time in quite a while, I am able to report that all teams have played and
recorded the same number of matches, i.e. 12. It now appears likely that the
semi-finalists will be Willoughby Blue, Ararat, Suns A & Suns B, although it is
not impossible for Willoughby Red or Harbord to finish in the top four.
Including this week, there are two weeks to go before the semis. Best of luck
for the sprint to the line!
Syd Birchall 9498-8646

TO SNDTTA Division 1 Players:
Attached are progress results for the Spring Interclub Competition up to and including week commencing 8/11 (week 11). It's very crowded at the top of the table and the final three weeks promise to be exciting. Remember, every point counts, so don't neglect the doubles even if you're down 4-0 or 3-1.
Best of luck!

To SNDTTA Division 1 Players:
Attached are progress results to and including week commencing
11/10 (week 7). A few points:
1. I need the score sheet for Harbord v.
Suns B from week 7.
2. Could Ararat organise their deferred
match from week 3 against Suns A and let me know the date. Suggest either
Monday 25/10 or Monday 1/11.
3. Could team captains be vigilant in reading the draw and making
sure they have a team to attend on the designated night and at the designated venue. We have had a case where one team failed to turn up
or notify the opposition and the unfortunate result was a 5-0 forfeit. We
always try to avoid forfeits by deferring matches wherever advance notice
is provided, but "no-shows" are obviously not acceptable.
The competition continues to be close but we can't get an accurate
reading until the deferred match has been played and all score sheets are in.
Best of luck in Round 2!

21/10/04
To SNDTTA Division 1 Players:
Attached are progress
results up to and including w/c 4/10 (week 6). With exception of the deferred
match between Ararat and Suns A, all results have now been included. The top
five teams are quite close although results of the deferred match could
change the rankings. The individual performances are still rather difficult to
interpret. A change from previous competitions is that many more players have
participated. As well as having an additional team this season, 28 players have
competed so far even though only 16 play each week. This has had the effect of
the average number of matches per player going down, so, although only one week
remains to complete Round 1, many players have not yet played against all
other teams. There are seven players with a 50% rubbers won record!

To SNDTTA Division 1 Players:
The results page contains progress results up to and including week
5 (week commencing 27/9); however, I have not received a score sheet for the Harbord v. Willoughby Blue match last Friday. Could whoever
has this sheet please e-mail or mail it to me urgently.
There was one relatively major upset last week when Suns B defeated
Suns A 5-0! The balancing-up of the two Suns
teams has definitely enhanced the competition.

To Sydney Northern Districts Division 1 Players
The results page contains progress results up to and including week
commencing 20/9 plus one match from week commencing 27/9 (week 5). It's
sometimes difficult to get the results in balance because two teams have home
matches on Mondays while the other six are on Fridays. Rather than wait another
week to get this Friday's results, I decided to include the match from week 5
played on Monday night (Hornsby v. Ararat). It's still too early to read a lot
into the individual performances.

To Sydney Northern Districts Division 1 Players
See the Recent Results for the first three weeks of the Spring
Interclub Competition. Except for Suns A at the top and North Sydney at the
bottom, the points table is very close. North Sydney should not be disheartened
as it is early days and some of their individual matches have been lost in 5
games. In fact, although they have so far won only one rubber, they have won 17
games in three matches.
The Individual Performances are not too meaningful at this early
stage. Some players have played only two rubbers and some have not yet played
at all.
Please let me know if you have any questions. If some of your
team mates are not receiving the email updates, please provide their e-mail
addresses and I'll add them to the contact list.
Best of luck!

For your information, I attach the draw for this competition. It starts in the week commencing 8 March and our first matches will be on Friday, 12 March (Blue at home to Harbord, Red away to Suns B). Both teams' matches during week 3 are "away" because Willoughby Park Centre is closed on Friday 26 March due to Council Elections being held on the following day. No matches are scheduled during the week commencing 5 April because Good Friday falls in that week and WPC will also be closed on that day.
24/02/04
TO WILLOUGHBY TT CLUB DIVISION 1 PLAYERS
Since e-mailing you with suggestions for three Autumn Competition teams, I have learned that Rob Chambers is needed at Ararat and Marcus Green is returning to SUNS. As well, Shin needs time to recover fully from his shoulder operation in December. It therefore seems sensible to basically stay with the Blue and Red teams from last year, as follows:
BLUE Gary Lo, Ellman Lee, Fung Cheung, Guy Roose (c)
RED Dennis Rylatt, Tommy Tong, Shin Nakazawa, Tony Bergman (c)
As Ararat will still have only two players (Michel & Rob), it may be that Shin will move to Ararat but a decision on this can be delayed until the last week of this month. Unless anyone has strong disagreement, I’ll register the teams as above with Barry Davies (MWDTTA Secretary) on Thursday this week. I will pay all fees with my own money and I would appreciate prompt reimbursement by cash or cheque. Fees are $62.00 for the year, consisting of TTNSW registration $37, MWDTTA $15 and WTTC $10. If anyone has already paid TTNSW separately, please let me know before Thursday (I know Tony has already paid).
The draw will be made during the last two weeks of this month with matches commencing in the first week of March.

To Manly Division 1 Players:
The Spring Teams Competition ended on Friday night with the Grand Final won by Willoughby Blue 3 – 0 against Suns A. Congratulations to Guy Roose (c), Gary Lo, Fung Cheung & Ellman Lee and commiserations to Don Carswell (c), Michael Kemp & Stewart McDonald. The result was closer than the numbers indicate because Don almost led Gary 2 – 0 and then an enthusiastic crowd saw a thrilling match between Fung & Michael which Fung won 19-17 in the fifth game! Fung staged a great fight back as he was down 2 – 0 and then 10-8 in the fifth. Match points were exchanged right to the end.
In the Final played the previous week, Suns A defeated Willoughby Red 3 – 0 with Don playing exceptionally well to win both singles matches in 5 games.
Details of these matches plus the final points table and the individual performances are on the usual results page. Congratulations to Gary Lo who topped the table with a 100% win performance! Special commendation to Derek Kerr, Wilson Chu & Michel Khachiki who played in every match. Thanks to everyone for doing their best at all times.
Have a great Xmas and a Happy New Year!

WILLOUGHBY TABLE TENNIS CLUB NEWS
AUGUST 2003
Spring Teams Competition
The competition starts next week and you can find the new draw here. We have converted the old Suns B team into Willoughby Green with Shin as captain. We did this because there are two Willoughby players and Willoughby is much more convenient for Shinji Owada and Shin than Wahroonga. Marcus is happy with this. With three teams, there will be 5 occasions when there will be two comp matches at Willoughby on the same night.
Rob Chambers has kindly agreed to join the Ararat team to strengthen it and keep up the numbers. It will be a much better team and Willoughby Blue still has three players.
For the first week, Green plays Suns A at Suns, Red plays Hornsby at Willoughby and Blue has a bye.
Willoughby Club Closed Singles Championship
As previously advised, this inaugural (and unofficial) event will be played at Willoughby this Friday, 22 August. Any club member who is there by 8:15pm will be entered in the draw. With 4 tables, we can play 4 round robin groups with a maximum of 4 players per group. Any more than that and it will have to be a knockout draw. The four group winners will play knockout semis and final. Four players will be seeded, one in each group, and the balance drawn at random. The usual $4 playing fee will apply. There will be a perpetual cup for the winner but, at least this year, nothing for runner-up (other than the pride of having done so well!). You don’t have to enter beforehand but, if anyone knows they will not be there, please send me an e-mail.
MWDTTA Presentation Dinner
Please don’t forget to order your tickets for the dinner on Saturday, 6 September at Forestville RSL. This year the dinner will be in the View Room which is a much better venue than last year’s dinner.
As always, don’t hesitate to let me know if you have any questions, comments or suggestions.

To Manly Division 1 Players:
Although there are matches still to be played in this final week of Round 2, we now know enough to say that the three finalists will be (1) Willoughby Blue (2) Suns A, and (3) Willoughby Red. Therefore, Suns A will play Willoughby Red in the Final at Suns on Tuesday 17 June and the winner will play Willoughby Blue in the Grand Final at Willoughby on Friday 27 June. Congratulations to these teams and good luck to them for the finals! Well done, to the other teams who always gave 100% and often upset the stronger teams. I will of course issue final team points and individual performances when they become available.
Attached are progress results to the end of last week (w/c 26/5) with one score sheet not yet received (Austral-Armenian v. Hornsby RSL). Two of the three matches this week are to be played tonight. One of those matches involves Harbord who will have a bye next week and it therefore appears impossible for Harbord to make the final three. Hornsby is still in with a chance although it will be tough going for them. Round 2 ends with next week's matches and we will then move to the Final (second place v. third place) followed by the Grand Final (first place v. winner of Final).
Attached are results of team and individual performances to and including week 10 (w/c 12/5/03). Last Friday night provided a surprise result with Willoughby Blue (Ellman, Fung) defeating Red (Dennis, Tommy) 5-0. Although all matches were very hard fought, Blue just had an edge throughout the night. It's a good example of how two evenly matched teams can sometimes provide a superficially one-sided result.

I attach progress results for teams and individuals to the end of Round 1 i.e. week commencing 21 April. (There is still one deferred match to be played, Austral-Armenian v. Suns B.) At present, the two Willoughby teams have a clear lead with Blue in first place and Red in second. If this trend continues, a real battle will be fought for third place and a position in the final.
